Perfect your pottery at this new workshop
We had a blast trying to throw pots last term. The laughter coming from the room of pottery wheels was testament to this (see this blog post for evidence).
Anyone who missed it, or who wants a refresher of the basics, can now get their chance.
Angus is teaching a new weekly pottery workshop on behalf of the Cairngorms Learning Partnership next month. He’ll be covering the basic skills, including using the wheel, handsculpting and glazing.
The class will run at Grantown Grammar School every Thursday night (from 6-8pm), starting from May 11, for five weeks. The cost is £65.

How to spend your holidays
Even though we’re on our Easter break, the art doesn’t stop – particularly with lots of upcoming exhibitions. Our annual exhibition is in June this year and there’s a few more events planned.
And there’s a chance to join our tutor Angus on a silversmithing course in the evenings. He’ll be down at Kingussie High School every Tuesday during May, teaching how to make silver rings with stone settings.

New Year, new skills to learn
Happy New Year to all SAG members and associates. We hope you had a wonderful time over the festive season. Perhaps you received some art goodies that you’re eager to master?
Classes start back on Wednesday January 11, so look out on our Spring Term page for news of upcoming Wednesday night workshops led by Angus. Don’t forget that we’re gearing up for our summer exhibition, which has the theme, Cairngorms.
But the first big news of the year is that our member Rona Smith will be leading a day of silk painting in February. This class, in association with the Cairngorms Learning Partnership, will cover a range of techniques for painting on silk, including using gutta salt.
You will go home with a beautiful piece of work that can be framed or turned into a suncatcher, scarf or cards.
All you need to take is an apron and a packed lunch – all materials and equipment will be provided. The cost is £45 for SAG members and £55 for non-members. The venue is Inverallan Church Hall in Grantown on February 4, 10am-3pm.

Just one week to go…
The Spey Art Group’s Wednesday night classes start again next Wednesday. Realise you’ve all probably rediscovered the Great British Bake-Off over the past two weeks but I’m sure that that we all want to swap the wooden spoon for a paintbrush.
A programme of lessons until Christmas is now on our Winter Term page. Angus has prepared lots of exciting plans to stretch our artistic skills.
He has also built in time for more tutoring this term so, if they wish to, members have a chance to spend more time on their personal projects.

A chance to make your Christmas presents!
The trees are starting to turn yellow so it must be time to start thinking about Christmas, right?
And that means presents, so this new workshop could be very timely for some members.
Our lovely tutor, Angus Grant, will be leading a day of jewellery-making in the Inverallan Chuch Hall in Grantown next month.
He will take you through a range of basic techniques and you will use semi-precious stones to make three pairs of earrings and a bracelet.
This is our first workshop in association with the Cairngorms Learning Partnership so it would be great if we can get a good turnout. Please pass this information to anyone you think would be interested.
The price for SAG members and associates is £45, while for non-members, it is £55. Materials and tools are included – all you need to bring (according to Angus) is your lunch and plenty of enthusiasm.

That’s life (drawing)
The Cairngorms Learning Partnership is offering the chance to learn or improve your life drawing skills.
Dan Cottam will be teaching a life class at the Iona Gallery on June 18, from 10am-4pm.
Activities will include:
- quick sketches and warm ups
- compositional and proportional sketches
- measuring in space and using relative comparisons
- How to use light and shade to create form
- Using negative space
- How to create perspective and deal with foreshortening

The latest list of courses offered by the Cairngorms Learning Partnership has been released.
On the schedule is French, outdoor painting, landscape photography and life drawing. Even if you’re just looking for inspiration, perhaps the birdsong course is the one for you!
And our very own tutor, Angus Grant is doing another silversmithing course.

Art classes in Badenoch and Strathspey
Our counterparts down the valley – the Society of Badenoch and Strathspey Artists – have a few arty workshops on offer in the next few months.
The first is ‘Object and Memory’ led by Eleanor White, of Bridge House Art, Ullapool. It will explore everyday objects and consider the stories that they tell. This course, costing £75, runs over two days:
- Friday April 22 – 7pm-9pm, and
- Saturday April 23 – 10am-4pm

The second is ‘Painting on Location’ with local artist Dan Cottam. He will teach a number of techniques for oil and acrylics landscape painting. This class will take place on May 7 at Loch Insh Watersports from 10am-4pm.Price – £55. Get more by clicking here.
And the third, which is also taught by Dan, is a life drawing class at the Iona Gallery. You’ll learn how to draw the human form, including lessons on composition and proportion. Get more information on the course by clicking here.
They’re being organised through the Cairngorms Learning Partnership. Even if you don’t fancy these ones, the CLP has a range of crafty workshops, all taught by local experts. Even our very own tutor, Angus Grant, is taking part. He’s teaching a felt-making workshop on March 19.
