A chance to take silk

Posted on Updated on

Our silk painting workshop next month is proving popular but there are a few spaces left.

As we’ve mentioned before, our enthusiastic SAG member Rona Smith will be your tutor and will demonstrate the key techniques of silk painting.

Then you will get the chance to create your own beautiful artworks.

To find out more, please visit Cairngorms Learning Partnership’s website – they are organising the day.

At this last stage, you should phone the CLP to book your place.

Dates for the diary

Posted on Updated on

2017 is shaping up to be a busy one for us.

We’ve updated our calendar on the What’s On page. Please check it out and mark down the important dates for the diary. And keep a look out for more during the year – we won’t be ignoring any opportunity to share our work!

You’ll also find dates for workshops. At the moment, the only one on the cards is silk painting with Rona Smith. This is a chance to have a go at a delicate art technique that produces wonderful results.

New Year, new skills to learn

Posted on Updated on

Happy New Year to all SAG members and associates. We hope you had a wonderful time over the festive season. Perhaps you received some art goodies that you’re eager to master?

Classes start back on Wednesday January 11, so look out on our Spring Term page for news of upcoming Wednesday night workshops led by Angus. Don’t forget that we’re gearing up for our summer exhibition, which has the theme, Cairngorms.

But the first big news of the year is that our member Rona Smith will be leading a day of silk painting in February. This class, in association with the Cairngorms Learning Partnership, will cover a range of techniques for painting on silk, including using gutta salt.

You will go home with a beautiful piece of work that can be framed or turned into a suncatcher, scarf or cards.

All you need to take is an apron and a packed lunch – all materials and equipment will be provided. The cost is £45 for SAG members and £55 for non-members. The venue is Inverallan Church Hall in Grantown on February 4, 10am-3pm.

Click here to go to the CLP’s page to find out more. Please note though: the CLP is shut until January 9.

Workshops galore!

Posted on Updated on

There are plenty of chances to learn something new this autumn.

As part of our new association with the Cairngorms Learning Partnership, our tutor Angus Grant is hosting a jewellery workshop.

It’s a chance to get started on making some Christmas presents – you’ll end the day with three pairs of earrings and a bracelet.

The workshop is on Saturday November 12 and will be at Inverallan Church Hall in Grantown, from 10am-2pm. Just £45 for Spey Art Group Members. For non-members, it’s £55 but for that extra tenner you get to be a SAG associate member for a year.

All you need to take is your lunch and some enthusiasm! Book your place here!

And the week before, Rona Smith will be taking a silk painting workshop at Grantown Museum. This is one of a series of craft workshops at the museum over the winter.

This is an introduction to the art and participants will get the chance to create a small mounted picture. All materials will be provided.

The class runs on Thursday November 3 from 7pm-9pm, at a cost of £10, including refreshments. Booking is essential – phone 01479 821762.

A tale of two art rooms

Posted on Updated on

The class went in two different directions on Wednesday night. One group started still life lessons with Angus, while a group of ladies went with Rona to carry on their silk painting.

We were spoilt for choice for the still life – shoes, kettles, old lamps, sheep skulls- and we got to create our own wee dens with bits of cardboard and old sheets.

Angus taught the still lifers how to use pen and ink. But it was a difficult technique to master and we definitely need more practice.

In the next room, everyone was busy producing some lovely delicate work, as you can see.
